Describe an educational television program that you liked.

You should say

– what the program was about

– when and where you saw it

– how you found out about this program

– and why you liked it

I’m going to talk about one of my favorite educational TV programs, which is a nature documentary called ‘Planet Earth’. There were eleven episodes of this program, and each one featured a different habitat on Earth, such as mountains, caves, deserts and jungles. The aim of the ‘Planet Earth’ series was to take the viewer into those habitats, using spectacular footage of interesting animals, plants and landscapes.

高分词汇(其实都是简单词汇):episode, feature, habitat, take..into, spectacular footage, landscapes.

I first saw ‘Planet Earth’ on television when it was broadcast by the BBC several years ago. I think it was shown every Sunday evening, which was the perfect time to watch a fascinating nature program. Then, a few years a ago, somebody bought me the DVD box set of the whole series as a Christmas present, and I watched the episodes again.

I found out about this TV programme because it was advertised repeatedly in the weeks before it was first aired. The TV trailers were really eye-catching because they showed incredibly beautiful images of nature. I also recognised the voice of the narrator of the programme, the well-known naturalist David Attenborough. It was these trailers that persuaded me to watch the first episode.

found out about一定要注意是“找到,搞清楚”意思,不是让你评价这个节目(how do you think of…)。

What I liked most about the ‘Planet Earth’ series was its stunning photography and its global scope. For example, in the “Fresh Water” episode, they showed us the giant salamander in Japan, crocodiles in the river Nile, and river dolphins in the Amazon. I was amazed at how they had managed to film such interesting creatures in so many locations. I enjoyed learning about strange animal species, and the programme opened my eyes to the hidden wonders of our planet.

高分词汇:stunning photography, global scope, opened my eyes, hidden wonders.

Some people think educate children of different abilities together will benefit them. Others think intelligent children should be taught separately and give special courses. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Putting students of different abilities together makes it possible for them to help and encourage each other, and even have cooperation, which can do justice to their respective potentials.

To separate students according to their scores, on one hand, inject a sense of superiority into the minds of those who stand out, and, on the other hand, make those who are ordinary feel self-‐abased. It is known to all that pride makes people weak in front of frustration and inconfident students dare not to face various challenges when they grow up. It furthure causes a hostile and discriminating atmosphere which should not be allowed in the school by any means.

When the class is a blend of students who widely different on academic performance, it is highly unlikely that the teachers can successfully choose the difficulty which suits all students, and during this dilemma, it become hardly possible for them to ensure the teaching efficiency.

Pooling intelligent students can help improve the competition in the class, and in the most ideal case, teachers simply can let peer pressure play the role when classmates’ high marks become the impetus for more painstaking study.

Students’ under-‐performance on one kind of subjects, e.g. math and physics does not mean that they are incompetent on other ones. Education is more a matter of finding out what students are good at but not of how to make them become excellent on subjects we believe they should do well, e.g. in the current modern society, even playing computer games can be one’s promising career.

Some people believe teenagers should concentrate on all school subjects. But, others believe they should focus on the subject that they are best at or that they find the most interesting. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

When a country develops its technology, the traditional skills and ways of life die out. It is pointless to try and keep them alive. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Modern technology is efficient, whereas traditional ways have low productivity, e.g. cultivating crops

Technological progress is a social trend which is inevitable, e.g. from pigeon mail (飞鸽传书)to telephones to smart-‐phones, people have kept moving on from old ways of doing things.

žž Traditions embody the culture, and the continuation of civilisation highly depends on it. If traditions were abandoned, the corresponding culture disappeared as well, and the world would become a boring whole, e.g. it is hard to imagine a Chinese that does not celebrate Spring Festival, so does an American who forget about Thanks Giving.

Tradition is the origin of literally all technological innovation, e.g. from rope knot count (结 绳计数) to math to calculation to modern computing science. In other words, technology is merely the other facet (另一面) of tradition.

An interesting thought is that we can use technology to protect and even promote tradition,

e.g. the productions of shadow play (皮影戏) are too old to fascinate people nowadays, especially the younger generation. Instead of giving up this unique form of art and watching ‘Britain’s Got Talents’, some people have decided to revive it by employing modern script writing and filming techniques to make it popular again.

Technological progress in the past century has its negative effect, despite its remarkable contribution. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
